Orazio PORTUESE

Associate Professor of Latin language and literature [LATI-01/A]

Keywords

His research focuses on Latin literature and Classical and Late Antique philology, with particular emphasis on the manuscript transmission of ancient texts, textual criticism, the history of classical scholarship, and the processes of reception, rewriting, and transformation of the classical tradition. A central strand of his work is devoted to the Epigrammata Bobiensia, investigated from philological, exegetical, rhetorical, and transmission-historical perspectives. Other major areas of interest include Archaic, Augustan, and Late Antique Latin poetry, with studies on Naevius, Plautus, Catullus, Horace, Virgil, Ovid, and Ausonius; Latin metrics and textual editing; the relationship between Greek and Latin literary models; epigrammatic literature; and the dynamics of imitation, parody, and literary memory. In recent years, his research has also expanded to encompass the study of Humanistic miscellanies, the circulation of Classical excerpta in fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Sicily, the application of Digital Humanities methodologies to manuscript heritage, and representations of the East in Latin literature, with particular attention to processes of cultural interaction between Rome and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Orazio Portuese (Catania, 1985) is Associate Professor of Latin Language and Literature in the Department of Humanities at the University of Catania. His scholarly training developed under the guidance of Professor Rosa Maria D’Angelo, formerly Full Professor of Latin Language and Literature at the University of Catania, with whom he pursued his specialization in Latin philology and literature. Since his undergraduate years, he has devoted particular attention to the manuscript tradition of ancient texts, Late Antique poetry, and the history of classical scholarship.

He was educated at both the University of Catania and the Scuola Superiore di Catania, where he was a student from 2004 to 2009 and obtained both the First-Level and Second-Level Diplomas with highest honours. He graduated summa cum laude in Classical Philology from the University of Catania under the supervision of Professor Rosa Maria D’Angelo. He subsequently earned a PhD in Greek and Latin Philology from the University of Parma and obtained the Diploma of Archivist-Palaeographer from the Vatican School of Palaeography, Diplomatics and Archival Studies, following its two-year advanced programme.

At the Scuola Superiore di Catania, he further refined his academic training through advanced courses taught by leading scholars, including Gian Biagio Conte, Salvatore Silvano Nigro, Santo Lucà, Walter Berschin, and Laurent Pernot. He also conducted periods of study and research at the Seminar für klassische Philologie of Heidelberg University, with which he continues to maintain longstanding scholarly and institutional collaborations.

He has obtained three National Scientific Qualifications (Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale): in 2015 for the position of Associate Professor in Sector 10/D3 (Latin Language and Literature); in 2018 for Full Professor in the same sector; and in 2020 for Full Professor in Sector 10/D4 (Classical and Late Antique Philology). Both qualifications for Full Professorship were awarded unanimously by the respective national evaluation committees.

Alongside his research and teaching activities, he has held numerous academic leadership positions. Since September 2025, he has served as Rector’s Delegate for Research in the Social Sciences and Humanities (SH) at the University of Catania. Since November 2024, he has been President of the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Humanities (Lettere), and since December 2024 he has directed the interdepartmental research centre School for Saving Classics, dedicated to the preservation, study, and promotion of the Classical tradition in dialogue with contemporary culture. He is also a member of the Technical and Organisational Committee of the Giarrizzo Foundation, the Centre for Digital Humanities (CINUM), and the Centre for Cretan Archaeology (CEARC) at the University of Catania.

Over the years, he has held several positions in academic governance, including Vice-President of the Degree Programme in Humanities, member of the Degree Programme Quality Assurance Committee, Delegate of the Department Director for the monitoring of research grants and externally funded projects, coordinator of introductory courses in Classical Languages, and Delegate for Library Services. Since 2022, he has also chaired the University of Catania Subcommittee for the Latin Language Certification (CLL) of the Sicilian Region.

At the international level, he coordinates a Double Degree agreement between the Department of Humanities of the University of Catania and Heidelberg University, as well as four Erasmus+ Key Action 1 mobility agreements with the Universities of Jena, Saarland, Strasbourg, and the Democritus University of Thrace. He is also responsible for the Latin translations of the honorary degree diplomas awarded by the University of Catania.

His research focuses primarily on Latin literature, Classical and Late Antique philology, the manuscript transmission of ancient texts, the history of classical scholarship, and the reception of the Classical world. He serves as National Principal Investigator of the PRIN 2022 PNRR project EXCERPTA. Exploring Contents of Early Roman Period Taken from Anthologies (Sicily, Fifteenth–Sixteenth Centuries) and as National Substitute Principal Investigator of the PRIN 2022 project Roman Orientalism: Mapping Cultural Interactions through Latin Literature.

He is actively involved in scholarly publishing. He is Editor of the series Adiumenta Philologiae (Pàtron Editore) and Co-Editor of the series PhiloHumanistica. VIEW COURSES FROM A.Y. 2022/2023 TO PRESENT

Orazio Portuese’s research activity lies at the intersection of Classical Philology, Latin Literature, and the history of textual transmission, combining philological and literary analysis with textual criticism, palaeography, codicology, and the history of classical scholarship. His work spans a broad chronological range, from Archaic Latin literature to Late Antiquity, with particular attention to the processes of transmission, rewriting, and reception of Classical texts.

A first and fundamental area of investigation concerns the manuscript tradition and the history of Latin scholarship. In this field, he has achieved significant results through his studies on the Epigrammata Bobiensia, to which he has devoted numerous publications. His research led to the identification of a previously unknown manuscript witness and to a comprehensive reconstruction of the textual tradition of the collection, presented in the monograph Gli Epigrammata Bobiensia. Storia della tradizione e nuova classificazione dei testimoni (Rome, Edizioni di Storia e Letteratura, 2017). This line of inquiry also includes studies on twentieth-century classical scholarship and the history of philology, exemplified by his edition of the correspondence between Augusto Campana and Franco Munari.

A second major research area focuses on Archaic and Augustan Latin poetry, with particular attention to Catullus, Naevius, Plautus, Virgil, Tibullus, Ovid, Vitruvius, and especially Horace. Within this framework he produced the critical edition and commentary of Catullus’ Poem 67 (Paideia, 2013), numerous studies on Augustan literature, and the annotated edition of Horace’s Epodes, Odes, and Carmen Saeculare (Rusconi, 2020). His research has consistently explored literary models, poetic self-fashioning, intertextuality, and cultural memory.

A third line of investigation concerns Late Antique Latin literature, epigrammatic poetry, and the reception of Classical models. In this context, he has devoted particular attention to the Epigrammata Bobiensia, Ausonius, and the transformation of literary genres between Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, with a focus on imitation, rewriting, and the creative re-elaboration of the Classical heritage.

In recent years, his research has increasingly expanded towards the history of Humanism, the transmission of Classical texts in Renaissance Sicily, Digital Humanities, and the study and valorisation of manuscript heritage, integrating traditional philological methodologies with digital tools. At the same time, he has developed research on the construction of cultural alterity in Latin literature and on the interactions between Rome and the East within the broader framework of Mediterranean cultural history.

The continuity and development of these research interests are reflected in an extensive record of funded research projects.
